Not just for now, but for a lifetime
Embracing circularity to drive impact
Our products account for 98% of our environmental footprint, with a significant part of their impact determined during the design phase. To address this, we employ a rigorous EcoDesign process focused on energy efficiency, sustainable packaging, materials, and circularity. This approach enables us to:
- Enhance the energy efficiency of our products
- Reduce resource consumption
- Increase the use of recycled content
- Eliminate hazardous substances
- Create packaging that is easier to recycle
- Our goal is to ensure all new products meet our EcoDesign requirements by 2025.
Building on these principles, we are developing a new set of circular design principles to further improve product efficiency and bring lasting happiness to our consumers. We are exploring new technologies to make maintenance more intuitive and scale the reparability of our products, ensuring they have multiple lives. By applying modularity and parts standardization, we enable remanufacturing and parts harvesting.
Launching the world's first Breakfast Set made from bio-based plastics*
In our efforts to cut down on our environmental impact, we know we need to use less virgin plastic. That’s why we’ve teamed up with suppliers and recyclers worldwide to use more recycled materials in products and packaging. We think of it as a commitment to "vintage" plastic. And while we don't have access to enough quality recycled plastic to replace all the virgin plastic in our products right now, by 2027, we're aiming for 30% sustainable sourced plastic in our Philips products. We're also exploring new exciting plastic options that have a link to the natural world like bio-based plastic. Bio-based plastic is made from renewable sources like plants or other biological materials even used cooking oil.
Our Eco Conscious breakfast set is made from bio-based plastics derived from among other things used cooking oil. With this this innovation, we aim to reduce plastics made from fossil fuels and instead rely on what is already available. By using this Bio-based plastic in our Eco Conscious Breakfast Set we contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions, during the production process, by 21%**

Expanding refurbishment, a new life for your products
Without refurbishment, products sold online then returned to us would end up in a recycling pile - simply because the packaging has been opened and the product may have been used. It’s a waste – of resources, energy, and potential. The most sustainable choice is to keep products in circulation for as long as possible. This is why we started our refurbishment program already back in 2018.
From 2021 until the present we prevented approximately 400 tons of electronic waste through refurbishment, and we are advancing our efforts consistently.
Returned products get a second chance when you choose a refurbished product. We offer guaranteed Philips quality, 2-year warranty (same as a new product) and less waste is created.

Big change comes in all packages
We are proud to have introduced a more sustainable packaging for our Philips home appliances. Our new cardboard packaging is made from 100% recycled and 100% recyclable paper, reflecting our commitment to reducing environmental impact. This initiative begins with our top-performing products, such as the Philips Airfryer and Espresso Machine with LatteGo, and will extend across our entire portfolio and all markets in the coming years.
We have also committed to replacing all single-use plastics inside our product boxes with sustainable alternatives within the coming years. The redesigned packaging minimizes waste through optimized dimensions and reduced ink usage, ensuring we use resources more efficiently. Additionally, we have replaced traditional multi-language user manuals with scannable QR codes, allowing customers to access digital guides and support in their preferred language.
These steps represent our ongoing dedication to sustainable practices and innovation. We aim to combine sustainability and innovation with a digital-first mindset and hassle-free packaging that is fit for purpose.
Our sustainable packaging principles
* Main body made from 100% PP plastic from used cooking oil and other plant waste, certified on a mass-balance basis. (BioPP is up to 94% of total plastic). ** Calculation based on the production of same appliance using bioplastic vs 100% virgin plastic (or virgin polypropylene).
